Our Awkward Black Girl Misadventures Told Through the Words of Issa Rae..
Jo-Issa Rae Diop, or as we've grown to know her as, Issa Rae....freestyled her way into my heart ever since i saw her rapping to her reflection in the bathroom mirror. She catapulted herself onto our timelines via her groundbreaking You Tube series, "Misadventures of the Awkward Black Girl", a scripted online show loosely based upon her life, and its sometimes sporadic unconventional circumstances. The series soon after landed her a book deal surrounding those "Misadventures" and of course, later on, it all came full circle when she was contacted by HBO for her now prime-time hit television show "Insecure". From day 1, Jo-Issa immediately radiated an unpolished and unfiltered energy that showcased the accuracy and authenticity of the post-millennial, inter-sectional, everyday Black woman experience. She didn't have to become the character, because she already was the character. She lived it, every day of her life. Her book, "The Misadventures of the Awkward Black Girl" told her story of being an introverted teenager from Senegal, learning to fit in before discovering how she was destined to stand out. An often untold story, that is also far too familiar to many of us. Without dishing any spoilers, Issa is once again unapologetic-ally herself in this personal tell tale of puberty, divorce, best friends, boyfriends, and how she awkwardly flourished into her adulthood, and her femininity. Not to mention, it is literally one of the funniest books ive ever read. For realzies. And Im "talking laugh out loud in public" funny, not a "cute little chuckle to yourself" kind of funny. If you're into that kind of thing, then its a must add book to your shelf :) This is her moment, and Issa Rae is rapidly becoming one of the most influential young women on our radar, and she's taking our lives along for the ride with her :) #ThatsWhatSheRead
